I've been an SEO marketer for years and I totally agree with you. What's the use of having a number one ranking if your site doesn't convert due to poor usablity?

I agree that it takes a lot of great on-page optimization to rank well. You may be Google #1 because of a well-planned off-page SEO but traffic won't convert into sales when users see that your site is poorly developed.
